Balcony-roads routes France

Balcony roads or balcony roads, roads which in the literal sense are sometimes glued to the mountain walls like a balcony, not set aside  for anxious drivers, wide motorhomes and certainly not for caravans.

If you like wide views, overhanging rocks, deep abysses and adventurous roads, then you will enjoy it here, on this road trip I have included 6 routes.

First up, the D 520c from Saint-Pierre-d'Entremond to Entre-deux-Guiers, is completely 2 lanes and runs smoothly. route 2 is a succession of 4 routes, the first being the D 531 from Villard-de-lans to Rencurel through very beautiful gorges 2 lanes to 1.5 lanes. Direction  Pont-en-Royans runs the D 518 which after La Cime du Mas turns into the D76 the Combe Laval Route again narrow, because of the high location on the mountain the view is breathtaking.

It continues on to St Martin d'Ardèche with the beautiful neighboring village of Aigueze situated higher up on the other bank of the Ardèche. Via Carpentras and Menerbes to Venasque where route 3 starts on the D942 the Gorges de la Nesque, although only lane, but nowhere really narrow, and again a beautiful gorges area.

On the way to Castalane we pass Moustiers Sainte Marie, a very beautifully well-maintained town built against the mountainside.

Route 4 starts after Moustiers-Sainte-Marie Sainte, the Gorges Du Verdon route on the D71 mostly wide road surface, but sometimes very narrow. It is wise to drive this route during your stay in Moustiers Sainte Marie because it starts and ends in this town.

In Gorges du Verdon take the D23 which eventually returns to Gorges du Verdon and then right again to follow the D952. In the gorge on which this route is situated, there is a good chance of spotting the golden eagle, and at viewpoints it is possible to see rock climbers climbing the steep cliffs.

The route continues in the direction of Digne-les-Bains where Route 6 starts via the D900a, the most beautiful balcony route of the route.

We drove the Route over the D900a, from Digne-les-Bains to Verdaches at the beginning of the morning, because of the rainfall of the previous night, the trip was spectacular through the fog that had transformed the area into a diffuse image, which gave the impression woke the way through the clouds.

During this route it is wise to ignore the navigation system during the Balcony route because this system has different ideas, and we miss the beautiful routes.

Beautiful towns along the route are especially Moustiers de Saint Marie, Algueze, Menerbes, Castalane, Briancon and Chamonix.

The surroundings of Chamonix are home to beautiful nature such as Mont Blanc, the glaciers Mer de Glace which can be visited by train.

A hike to the Glacier des Bossons is a start with a ski lift / cable car and an option to drop you off at the foot of the hike.

A free public transport ticket is provided at the Mer du Glace campsite, but the train to the Mer de Glace glacier is not included.

The visit to the glacier Mer du Glas provides an insight into climate change, showing how its size has decreased in about 100 years.
